Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The production of sewage sludge is considered a global challenge due to the large volumes generated and the heterogeneous composition of this waste, which is characterized by the presence of pathogens, heavy metals, emerging pollutants, and other hazardous compounds. Nevertheless, sewage sludge may also represent a valuable source of organic matter and essential plant nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, for agricultural applications.

However, to fully exploit the potential of sewage sludge as a resource, appropriate treatment is required. The most common treatment processes include anaerobic digestion (either mesophilic or thermophilic), which is usually carried out at a wastewater treatment plant, followed by composting. In recent years, the transition towards a circular economy has promoted these treatment strategies, emphasizing the recovery and valorization of waste rather than its disposal through incineration.

Despite the potential benefits of converting sewage sludge into an organic amendment for agricultural use, concerns remain regarding the presence of potentially hazardous contaminants and their possible transfer to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, as well as their eventual entry into the food chain. Many of these contaminants are still not adequately considered in current legislation and, consequently, their environmental and health risks are not fully addressed.

Therefore, this Special Issue has been launched to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on bioremediation strategies and recent advances in biological processes, including bioaugmentation, biostimulation, composting, and bioreactor-based technologies, aimed at the degradation, transformation, immobilization, or elimination of pollutants present in sewage sludge, with particular emphasis on emerging contaminants and microplastics.

As Guest Editors of this Special Issue, we would like to invite you to submit research articles, short communications, and review articles that are aimed at this topic, with the goal of presenting a collection of articles that explore the main bioremediation strategies for enhancing sewage sludge treatment and promoting the production of safer organic amendments.
