Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Crisis prevails in the current organization operating environment of organizations. A combination of globalization, climate change, and social inequalities have laid the groundwork for this era of uncertainty, as the world moves from one crisis to the next in pursuit of sustainability. Scholars have noted that this era requires responses that are different and often counter-intuitive to the operating environment with which most companies are familiar (Katsos and Miklian, 2021). Learning from companies that have operated in crisis settings such as fragile and conflict-affected states is viewed as a means towards helping companies thrive in spite of the current “constant crisis” environment.

This Special Issue seeks papers that provide empirical evidence and theoretical contributions regarding how organizations can and should sustainably adjust their management and operations to adapt to the current era of uncertainty.  We employ a wide definition of crisis, including climate and environmental stress, financial and economic crisis, consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, and other social, political, environmental, and financial crisis triggers and settings. Contributions based upon lessons learned from organizations in fragile and conflict-affected states are particularly welcome, as are those that show how organizations can use operations to address the underlying conditions of the era of uncertainty, i.e., climate change, globalization, and social inequalities. We encourage quantitative, qualitative, and theoretical contributions from all fields, particularly from multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches.

Original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Business risk under crisis: reputational, financial, social, political.
  • The social role of business in crisis settings.
  • Relationships and tensions between sustainable development and business.
  • Business and peacebuilding, business and conflict.
  • Business and globalization challenges.
  • The climate crisis and corporate sustainability.
  • Lessons from COVID-19.
  • Business, inequality, and development.
  • Theoretical papers on crisis and development.
  • Empirical / case study papers on particular businesses working through crisis.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
