Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We invite submissions to a Special Issue of Sustainability focused on “Greenways as a Sustainable Urban Planning Strategy”. Greenways may be defined as linear parks that also serve as pedestrian and bicycle corridors, connecting diverse urban environments. We are interested the potential of such greenways to address issues of environmental sustainability and ecological resilience as well as questions of social equity and the “right to the city”. Scholars have raised serious questions about high-profile greenways projects in the United States, such as New York city’s High Line, Chicago’s Bloomingdale Trail, and the Atlanta Beltline on local real estate markets, seeing them as a form of neoliberal redevelopment that drives gentrification and displacement while projecting an appealing green aura. On the other hand, some European greenway projects, such as the Green Belt Berlin, may be seen as honoring histories of trauma while preserving unique urban ecologies and providing access to nature within dense urban areas undergoing redevelopment pressure. Greenway projects are now established or underway in many other cities, but there remains much to learn about their social dynamics, implications for mobility and health, and long-term environmental and economic impacts, not only in Europe and America but in Asia and the Global South.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
