Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Socio-economic modernity faces a number of challenges. Key among them is ensuring effective development and the ability to create benefits for societies and economies in the long term and in a responsible manner, with an eye to future generations. This creates a backdrop of difficult and responsible choices made in a number of dimensions related to the functioning of societies and economies.

Sustainable development is a concept of responsible growth, oriented toward the ability to simultaneously achieve economic, social, and environmental goals. Economic goals are essentially the results of an organization's activities in light of the challenges of sustainable management. They should be considered broadly as the effects of entities working to create social well-being while caring for the environment, strengthening their position on the market. Within this, it is important to take care of the work environment and employees (sustainable management of the labor function).

Sustainability in terms of environmental goals essentially focuses on reducing the negative impact of human activities on the environment. In this area, ecological practices in economic and social daily life are important, with a particular focus on renewable energy, green transportation, reducing the consumption of raw materials, recycling, and a range of other activities.

There are extensive contemporary challenges in the sphere of sustainable development. This justifies the need for further research to gain knowledge for solving problems in this area, which is important for societies and economies. These challenges are often diverse and require multidisciplinary efforts. Hence, both theoretical considerations (reviews) and creative works covering the results of research on practical grounds, among others, will be relevant to this Special Issue. The topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Sustainable organizations;
  2. Sustainable business models;
  3. Sustainable economics;
  4. Sustainable management;
  5. Innovation for sustainable development;
  6. Investment in sustainable development and the financing of sustainable development inputs;
  7. Formal legal frameworks for sustainable economic development;
  8. Evolution of sustainable development and its impact on the socio-economic environment;
  9. Sustainable society;
  10. The citizen/individual consumer in light of sustainable development—challenges and dilemmas;
  11. Education for sustainable development;
  12. Ethics and respect for rights in sustainable economic development.

The topic of sustainable development in light of current socio-economic challenges is extremely broad. The proposed problem threads do not exhaust the subject.

Among the studies in the area of organisational performance analysis, little attention is paid to assessing the impact of employee well-being on business performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the sources of employees’ psychological well-being and assess its impact on business performance. The study was conducted in the form of a diagnostic survey among seven pharmaceutical entities operating in the market in Poland. The analysis and inference were based on the rules of economic and financial analysis, with particular emphasis on the cause–effect approach in the study of relationships. The sample of respondents was made up of seven pharmaceutical companies operating in the market in Poland, so the findings developed relate only to the companies accepted for the study and cannot be transferred to the general population of the country’s pharmaceutical sector. The objective of the study was made possible by appropriately selected methods of qualitative and quantitative nature. The study used the results of our own research (diagnostic survey), methods drawn from the instrumentarium of economic analysis (cause–effect analysis and dependency analysis) and statistical research techniques. The main findings of the paper indicate that the quality of organisational performance and its ability to shape the performance of activity-dependent firms is significantly dependent on the mental well-being of the workforce, as confirmed by the survey results. Firms with very good and good performance in operations demonstrate 88% of their staff achieving mental well-being. A key determinant of the above is job security (very important) and salary. The above leads to the fundamental conclusion that an important aspect of the management of a modern company is care for the comfort of working conditions, proper relations and determining the psychological safety and satisfaction of employees, which is unquestionably in the interest of both parties. The findings developed enrich the source material that can serve the management of organisations in shaping a sustainable HR strategy. Full article

As a novel development concept and model, the cultural and creative industries have become an important sector of the global economy owing to their diverse development pathways. In particular, the animation industry surpasses traditional sectors in scale. This industry demonstrated unprecedented resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting its critical significance in the global economy. In this study, the SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat)-PEST (political, economic, social, and technological factor) analytical model was employed to systematically assess various properties of the animation industry in China. Through an in-depth analysis of both internal and external factors affecting the industry and in consideration of conditions in the post-pandemic era, industrial development strategies across macro, meso, and micro levels were proposed to improve the existing development system. It was found that policy guidance at the macro level, improving the industry chain, integrating technologies at the meso level, and expanding target markets and financial channels at the micro level are key strategies for the continued development of the industry. This study offers new insights and directions for the sustainable development of the animation industry in China. Full article
