Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The Special Issue titled “Information and Perception Technologies Development and Applications on Transportation Sector” provides an international forum for the dissemination of the latest original research, achievements, and developments in many areas of the transportation sector. The Special Issue aims to provide a multidisciplinary forum for researchers, industries, operators, and infrastructure managers involved in the different fields of the transportation sector to present innovative results and to introduce to a broader audience the more recent publicly financed projects aiming to introduce new technologies and innovation in the transport domain.
Recently, the transport sector has been subject to a wide process of innovation with the aim to improve the efficiency of its management and its sustainability. Technology developments, the introduction of innovative technologies, and also technologies and methods borrowed by other sectors, not only in transportation, can contribute to a global re-thinking of the different transport systems, promoting some sectors, such as the railway one, as an innovative and sustainable transport mode. Indeed, the environmental emergency related to the greenhouse effect due to CO2 emissions produced also by the Transport Sector suggests a redistributuion of the role of the different transport modes where, for instance, the railway and the water transports can also play an important role as mass mode transport of the future, more attractive for ecologically friendly users. Furthermore, the integration of different transport modes is the current evolution of the transport sector, allowing a more efficient transport of people and freight and improving the customers’ experience.
Reviews, regular research papers, communications, and short notes regarding all aspects of the development of information and perception technologies development and applications in the transportation sector will be welcome, providing an international forum.
This Special Issue encourages scientists and industrial operators to publish their experimental and theoretical research about topics related but not limited to:
- New transport management systems to improve system management and sustainability
- Transport sustainability
- Introduction of new technologies in the transport domain to improve its efficiency and sustainability
- New platforms and demonstrators for innovative transport systems
- Multimodality
This Special issue aims to provide a wide overview of the current evolution of the railway transport sector, focusing on new technologies and applications with a global approach where technological innovation and sustainability cooperate to design an efficient and sustainable transport mode.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
