Dear Colleagues,
According to United Nations projections, nearly 70% of the world’s population will live in urban areas by 2050. The rapid growth of cities and their associated infrastructure poses enormous challenges for the environment. Cities are currently responsible for over 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, consume approximately 80% of the world’s energy, and generate the majority of global waste. They are thus becoming a key area for the implementation of sustainable development principles. Environmental sustainability in cities involves limiting the negative impact of human activity on the environment through the rational use of energy, the reduction of pollutant emissions, and the development of environmentally friendly infrastructure. The energy transition plays a significant role here, involving a shift from traditional energy sources to renewable energy sources (RES), such as solar, wind, and geothermal energy. This special issue invites researchers, experts, and policymakers to present research findings and innovative solutions regarding sustainable urban development, based on the efficient management of energy resources in urban areas, taking into account economic, social, and environmental aspects. Assessing the impact of sustainable energy on socioeconomic and environmental factors can also provide valuable insights into energy development, as well as effective policy implications.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
