Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As the global energy transition accelerates towards deep decarbonization, the integration of hydrogen—particularly green hydrogen from renewables—into power systems represents a critical, transformative pathway. This Special Issue aligns with our journal's core mission to address complex sustainability challenges, focusing on the synergistic opportunities arising from the deep coupling of electricity and hydrogen sectors.

The scope is broad, welcoming submissions that provide integrated, scientific and socio-economic approaches to this transition. We seek contributions including (but not limited to):

  • Optimal planning and collaborative operation of integrated electricity-hydrogen systems;
  • Advanced modeling and control of electrolyzers and fuel cells for grid support services;
  • Techno-economic analysis, policy frameworks, and market designs that quantify the sustainability and value of power-to-hydrogen (P2H) and hydrogen-to-power (H2P) applications;
  • The role of hydrogen in enhancing power system flexibility and resilience with high renewable energy penetration.

The purpose of this issue is to consolidate cutting-edge research that moves beyond isolated component analysis. While the existing literature often examines power systems or hydrogen technologies separately, this issue supplements current knowledge by emphasizing integrated, system-level perspectives. By measuring and monitoring the techno-economic and environmental impacts from this holistic viewpoint, this issue aims to provide robust tools and strategies to ensure hydrogen integration contributes effectively and equitably to a sustainable energy future.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
