Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Coastal communities worldwide face increasing challenges due to climate change, including rising sea levels, intensifying storms, and shoreline degradation. Addressing these challenges requires adaptive strategies that build resilience and ensure the long-term sustainability of coastal zones. These strategies include reinforcing infrastructure, promoting ecosystem-based adaptation, integrating climate considerations into urban planning, and ensuring equity in adaptation efforts.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to advance knowledge and practice in developing adaptive strategies that enhance coastal resilience, promote sustainability, and inform equitable policy responses. It seeks to bridge the gap between scientific research and practical implementation by highlighting innovative, cross-sectoral solutions such as ecosystem-based adaptation, cost-effective infrastructure investment, and public health preparedness. By drawing on diverse academic perspectives and case-based evidence, the issue aims to inform policymakers, planners, and communities striving to mitigate risk and navigate the long-term implications of climate change in coastal zones.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Climate risk assessment and vulnerability mapping in coastal regions;
- Ecosystem-based adaptation;
- Economic evaluations of adaptation measures, including cost–benefit and cost-effectiveness analyses;
- Public health impacts of coastal climate hazards, including disease outbreaks;
- Community-based adaptation practices and participatory planning approaches;
- Governance frameworks and institutional innovations for climate resilience;
- Integration of climate modeling with socio-economic, ecological, or health-focused research;
- Comparative studies of policy responses across different coastal contexts;
- Use of digital technologies and early warning systems for coastal risk management.
We encourage interdisciplinary submissions that bring together scientific, policy, and local perspectives to explore effective and inclusive responses to the evolving challenges of climate change in coastal areas.
I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
