Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue, “Driving Electric Power Solutions for a Sustainable Energy Transition”, aims to explore cutting-edge research and practical developments that address the challenges and opportunities arising from the global transition to low-carbon, sustainable energy systems. As highlighted by recent events such as the April 2025 Iberian blackout, high penetration of renewable energy sources introduces significant complexity to power system stability, reliability, flexibility, and control. This issue invites original contributions that advance intelligent system design, data-driven grid management, flexible operation strategies, and resilience-enhancing technologies. Topics of interest include—but are not limited to—smart grid coordination, AI-based forecasting and control, inverter-dominated system dynamics, adaptive protection, and energy storage integration.
Through this collection, we seek to promote interdisciplinary insights and innovative solutions that will shape the future of reliable, intelligent, and sustainable power systems. Topics of interest include, but not limited to, the following:
- Multi-vector and sector coupling energy systems;
- Large-scale renewable energy integration;
- Hybrid energy storage technologies for energy systems;
- System dynamics for inverter-dominated electric power systems;
- Grid resilience analysis and enhancement;
- Grid balancing, including frequency/voltage control and regulation;
- Intelligent coordination of distribution and transmission networks;
- Flexible resource management (V2G, demand response programs, and EMS);
- Siting, sizing and planning of power systems under uncertainties;
- Data-driven grid control;
- AI-enabled power systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
