Dear Colleagues,

In an era where the pursuit of a sustainable future is not just a choice but an imperative, understanding the true essence of sustainability has become fundamental. At its core, sustainability entails orchestrating virtuous change across the globe, aiming to create a harmonious balance between human activities and the environment. Resilient societies, on the other hand, are the cornerstone of this sustainable vision, characterized by the happiness and contentment of their people. This Special Issue of Sustainability is dedicated to exploring the nuanced perspectives that can help reconcile and achieve these overarching goals within the realm of tunnel and underground construction.

Tunnel and underground construction projects are far-reaching in their influence. They are not merely engineering undertakings but also have profound implications for the environment, society, and the quality of life of individuals. As the world increasingly emphasizes sustainable development, it is of utmost importance to explore how these construction activities can be carried out in an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, and economically viable manner. These challenges are further compounded by the diverse and complex geological conditions that tunnels often encounter, which require innovative solutions to ensure both construction and long-term operation are sustainable.

The built environment within tunnel and underground construction has a substantial impact on various aspects. It affects not only the immediate ecological surroundings but also the long-term sustainability of the regions where these projects are located. For instance, the choice of construction materials and methods can influence carbon emissions, energy consumption, and the disruption of natural habitats. Moreover, the design and layout of tunnels can impact the behavior and well-being of the people who use them, as well as the communities in the vicinity. In the context of complex geological environments, such as soft soils, karst regions, or high-stress rock formations, these impacts become even more pronounced, and finding sustainable solutions is crucial.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Tunnel low-carbon construction technologies;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
