Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Advancements in networks, intelligent systems, and digital technologies are reshaping the way transport infrastructure is managed, maintained, and safeguarded. From roads and railways to bridges and tunnels, integrated network-based solutions enable smarter monitoring, predictive maintenance, and real-time safety interventions.

This Special Issue, “Advances in Networks for Transport Infrastructure Management and Safety, focuses on research and practical applications demonstrating how technologies, such as IoT, simulation-based techniques, autonomous vehicles, digital twins, and AI-based methods, can support planning, maintenance, safety assessments, and operational management across the transport sector.

Submissions presenting novel methodologies, algorithms, simulation models, data-driven frameworks, and network architectures addressing safety, operational performance, and infrastructure asset management are encouraged.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Intelligent infrastructure;
  • AI-driven safety assessment of urban intersections;
  • Simulation-based evaluation of intelligent transport network performance;
  • Simulation-based evaluation of pedestrian safety measures;
  • Real-time incident detection in transport infrastructure;
  • IoT-based monitoring systems for transport infrastructure safety;
  • GIS network platforms for transport asset management;
  • Emerging technologies for transport infrastructure management;
  • Remote sensing applications (photogrammetry, LiDAR) in road and railway asset surveys;
  • UAV-assisted networked monitoring of transport infrastructure conditions;
  • Environmental monitoring related to transport infrastructure;
  • Simulation of mixed traffic scenarios involving autonomous and human-driven vehicles;
  • Infrastructure-to-vehicle communication for safe navigation of AVs in construction zones;
  • Evaluation of autonomous vehicle behavior in emergency situations;
  • Adaptive traffic signal control using machine learning and networked sensors;
  • AI-powered decision support systems for urban traffic and infrastructure management;
  • Digital twins for predictive maintenance and risk management in transport systems;
  • 5G and V2X communication for smart road and railway networks.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Smart Cities is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
