Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Special Issue aims to be a solid reference for the technological community to present the most recent results of scientific and technological research on sensors, with particular emphasis on applications and new trends (nanotechnology, biotechnology, and AI). Review papers are also welcome.

Most, but not all, of the focus of this Special Issue is on new technologies for the design, construction, efficiency, safety, comfort, and safe operation of the following: built environment sensors, signal processing, data analytics, artificial intelligence applied for low-cost sensors, sensor networks, optical wireless communication, thermographic cameras, thermal camera communication, and biosensors for real-time air and water quality monitoring. The use of AI and machine learning for data analysis and interpretation provided by low-cost, portable sensors and networks for developing countries, as well as intercomparison studies that include such sensors, are especially welcome for this Special Issue.

Some topics of interest are as follows:

  • Sensor networks for large-scale environmental monitoring (soil–plant–atmosphere continuum);
  • Industrial and wastewater treatment plants water quality sensors;
  • Aquaculture and fisheries water quality sensors;
  • Drinking water supply systems;
  • Water quality sensors for environmental research: evaluating the impact of changing water quality on aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity from rivers, lakes, and oceans helps in preserving aquatic habitats and protecting endangered species, as do climate change studies;
  • Low-cost air quality sensors for outdoor monitoring (particulate matter, ozone, and other harmful gases), including intercomparisons and calibration studies with reference methods;
  • Cultural Heritage that is affected by the underground, floods, and infiltration, or by air pollutants. Thermographic camera and imaging, optical wireless communication; thermal camera communication;
  • Materials for high-performance sensors, such as porphyrins, phthalocyanines, and calixarenes, as highly favored macrocyclic molecules in numerous areas due to their π-conjugated, delocalized electronic structures

We look forward to receiving your manuscripts!

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sensors is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
