Dear Colleagues,
Gas sensing technology plays a pivotal role in addressing global challenges such as air pollution monitoring, industrial safety, medical diagnostics, food quality control, and smart home automation. With the rapid advancement of nanomaterials, microfabrication techniques, and artificial intelligence, the field of gas sensors has entered a transformative era. Emerging trends include room-temperature operation, ultra-low power consumption, wearable and flexible platforms, multi-gas detection arrays (electronic noses), and sensor-data fusion with machine learning. These developments not only enhance sensitivity and selectivity but also enable real-time, distributed sensing networks for the Internet of Things (IoT). The timely convergence of materials science, electronics, and data analytics makes gas sensing one of the most dynamic and impactful research areas today.
This Special Issue aims to present and disseminate the most recent advances related to gas sensing technologies, covering the entire chain from fundamental sensing mechanisms to practical system integration. We consider contributions addressing novel sensing materials (e.g., metal oxides, 2D materials, perovskites, conductive polymers, MXenes), innovative device architectures (e.g., chemiresistive, electrochemical, optical, acoustic, field-effect transistor, and calorimetric sensors), signal processing and pattern recognition algorithms, and application-oriented prototypes for environmental, biomedical, industrial, and agricultural scenarios. Both original research articles and comprehensive review papers are welcome. The scope is intentionally broad to capture the full spectrum of current innovation in gas sensing.
Topics of interest for publication include, but are not limited to, the following:
Novel gas-sensitive materials and their synthesis (structures, heterojunctions, composites);
Room-temperature and low-power gas sensors;
Flexible, wearable, and implantable gas sensors;
Optical gas sensors (e.g., plasmonic, fiber-optic, photoacoustic);
Electrochemical gas sensors and solid-state electrolytes;
MEMS/NEMS-based gas sensors;
Electronic nose and multi-sensor arrays;
Machine learning and deep learning for gas recognition and quantification;
Gas sensors for environmental monitoring (e.g., NO2, O3, CO, VOCs);
Gas sensors for breath analysis and medical diagnosis;
Gas sensors for food freshness and agricultural monitoring;
System integration, wireless communication, and IoT-enabled sensing nodes.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process.
