Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hyperspectral remote sensing has long been a powerful approach for investigating the composition, alteration and geological evolution of lunar and planetary surfaces. By providing continuous spectral information across visible, near-infrared, shortwave-infrared and thermal wavelengths, hyperspectral observations enable the identification and mapping of minerals, rocks, volatiles and other surface materials at regional to global scales. With the continued development of lunar and planetary exploration missions and the increasing availability of new hyperspectral datasets, opportunities are emerging to investigate lunar and planetary surface compositions at improved spatial, spectral and contextual scales. Recent and upcoming missions, including Tianwen-2, Chang’E-7, BepiColombo and JUICE, will further expand the range of spectroscopic observations across the Moon, small bodies, Mercury and the icy moons of Jupiter, providing new opportunities for comparative studies of lunar and planetary surface composition and evolution.

This Special Issue aims to bring together recent developments and applications of hyperspectral remote sensing for lunar and planetary surface composition mapping. It welcomes studies focusing on the Moon, Mars, Mercury, asteroids, icy bodies and other planetary bodies, with particular attention to spectral analysis, mineralogical and chemical mapping, surface material characterization, geological interpretation and mission-related applications. Contributions that combine hyperspectral observations with laboratory spectral simulation and analysis, in situ measurements, geomorphology, geochemical constraints, numerical modeling or returned-sample studies are also encouraged.

Potential topics include hyperspectral data calibration and correction, spectral parameterization, mineral and volatile detection, lithological and compositional mapping, spectral unmixing, machine learning and artificial intelligence, multi-source data integration, laboratory spectral characterization, surface alteration and space weathering, landing site assessment and applications to current and future lunar and planetary exploration missions. Original research articles, reviews, technical notes and data/methodology papers are welcome.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
