Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Smart manufacturing represents a paradigm shift in industrial production, integrating cyber-physical systems, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, and advanced process control to create highly adaptive and efficient production environments. As global industries face increasing demands for precision, flexibility, and sustainability, real-time monitoring and control of manufacturing processes have become critical enablers of competitive advantage and operational excellence.
The convergence of digital technologies with traditional manufacturing processes has opened unprecedented opportunities for improving product quality, reducing waste, enhancing energy efficiency, and enabling rapid customization. Real-time process control systems, underpinned by edge computing, machine learning, and advanced sensor fusion, are transforming how manufacturers respond to disturbances, maintain process stability, and achieve optimal operating conditions across diverse industrial sectors.
This Special Issue on “Advances in Smart Manufacturing Process and Real-Time Control” seeks high-quality original research and comprehensive review articles focusing on cutting-edge advances at the intersection of manufacturing process engineering and intelligent real-time control systems. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Real-time monitoring and adaptive control strategies for smart manufacturing systems.
- Machine learning and AI-driven process optimization and fault diagnosis.
- Digital twin development and virtual commissioning for manufacturing processes.
- IoT-enabled sensor networks and data fusion for process intelligence.
- Edge computing and cloud-based architectures for industrial real-time control.
- Cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) and Industry 4.0/5.0 integration.
- Advanced process control (APC) with model predictive control (MPC) in smart factories.
- Human–robot collaboration and human-in-the-loop control systems.
- Intelligent quality control and real-time defect detection using computer vision.
- Energy-efficient manufacturing process scheduling and optimization.
- Robustness and resilience of real-time control systems under uncertainty.
- Case studies on smart manufacturing implementation in aerospace, automotive, electronics, and chemical industries.
I/We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
