Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Shale oil and gas development has become an important area of concern in the petroleum and natural gas industry in recent years. However, due to the heterogeneous composition and abundant nano-pores of shale reservoirs, their development is more difficult compared to conventional reservoirs, and theoretical and methodological research on shale characterization and flow simulation is unique. The composition of shale is relatively complex, with abundant inorganic and organic matter, and the organic–inorganic synergistic effect brings new challenges to the characterization of shale. The pore size of shale is extremely small, and nanopores play an vital role in pore networks, which makes conventional characterization methods often unsuitable for this type of reservoir. At the same time, the extremely small pores result in different pore-scale flow behaviors compared to conventional reservoirs, and fluid flow in different pore sizes often involves phase behavior alteration, and led to a relatively late start in research on flow simulation. Therefore, research on the characterization and flow simulation of shale plays a positive role in the efficient development of shale reservoirs.

This Special Issue on “Process Engineering for Shale Reservoir Characterization and Enhanced Recovery” seeks high-quality works focusing on the latest novel advances for shale characterization and simulation. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • New methods for characterizing the composition and pore structure of shale
  • Flow behavior at the pore-scale of shale
  • Phase behavior and nano-confinement effect of fluid flow in shale pores
  • Geological modeling and oil and gas numerical simulation of shale reservoirs
  • New technologies and advances in shale flow simulation
