Dear Colleagues,
Advanced ceramics that include structural and functional ceramics are widely used in aerospace, nuclear, cutting machine, renewable energy, and scintillation applications. The investigation and development of these materials are critical for national defense, energy, and healthcare industries.
The processing of advanced ceramics is the key to properties and performance. It determines the materials’ microstructure, phase composition, grain boundary, reproducibility, scalability, energy consumption, and production cost. To achieve certain properties and reliable performance, a precise processing routine must be performed. Therefore, the processing needs to keep improving.
This Special Issue on “Process Innovations and Microstructure Engineering for Advanced Ceramics” aims to cover recent research about the development of effects of processing on microstructure and properties. Topics include, but are not limited to, ceramic fabrication methods in the following areas:
- Manufacturing of ultra-high temperature ceramics;
- Improving the properties of ceramics for thermal protection systems;
- Design and fabrication of composites for nuclear applications;
- Ceramic processing simulations;
- Processing of energy storage materials.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
