Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Solid fuel—including coal, biomass, municipal solid waste, and other carbonaceous materials—remain indispensable to the global energy mix and industrial feedstock portfolio. In the context of climate change, energy transition, and carbon neutrality goals, improving the clean and efficient utilization of solid fuels has become increasingly critical.

This Special Issue focuses on recent progress in the combustion, pyrolysis, and gasification of solid fuel—three key thermochemical conversion pathways that directly influence energy efficiency, pollutant emissions, and the value-added utilization of by-products. Combustion remains the dominant route for heat and power generation, while pyrolysis and gasification offer cleaner, more flexible strategies for producing fuels, chemicals, and syngas from solid materials.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Advanced modeling and diagnostics of combustion/gasification processes.
  2. Reaction mechanisms and kinetics of pyrolysis and devolatilization.
  3. Co-firing of biomass with coal or other solid fuel.
  4. Ash behavior, slagging, and pollutant formation.
  5. Reactor and process design for pyrolysis and gasification.
  6. Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) strategies integrated with solid fuel use.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
