Dear Colleagues,
Nowadays, different production fields, including engineering, medical, food, and pharmaceutical fields, among others, are dealing with an ever-increasing demand for more advanced materials that can satisfy the need for more effective, high-quality, safe, and sustainable production.
Ceramic materials are a fascinating and emerging group of materials that are being rapidly developed and improved. Ceramics typically have extraordinary properties compared to other materials. Some of these properties include excellent corrosion resistance to different aggressive environments; high-wear resistance; the ability to retain good mechanical properties at high and extreme temperatures; and tailored electrical, magnetic, or optical properties.
The industrial application of modern technical ceramics and ceramic coatings is extensive, ranging from professional or personal electronic equipment, novel technologies of energy production and storage, transportation, aviation and space technology, the purification of exhaust gases and waste waters, the cutting of hard materials, etc. In addition, due to their high biocompatibility, and the possibility of conducting individual 3D-modelling of both bulk and porous ceramics, ceramics are becoming more popular in the biomedical industry, ranging from orthopedic, cardiac, or dentistry implants, both in human and in veterinary medicine.
The challenges of proper environmental protection, the conservation of natural resources and energy, and non-polluting waste management are at the heart of global efforts for more sustainable development. For example, lead-containing ceramics have been and are still used in electronic equipment and devices, and are considered hazardous to the environment, both during production and at the product’s end-of-life. Hence, novel ceramic materials and recycling process need to be developed and implemented.
This Special Issue of MDPI’s journal Processes aims to present novel research and developments in the field of ceramic particles, layers, or ceramic materials by including papers that focus on improving existing or developing novel processes used to produce high-quality ceramic products that are cost-effective, properly modelled and optimized, and possibly automated, while keeping ceramic production and ceramic products both user-safe and environmentally safe and sustainable.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
