Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The emerging nexus of waste valorization and green materials innovation is driving transformative approaches in water treatment and environmental remediation, hence linking circular economy principles with innovative practical solutions for ecosystem restoration. Recent technological advances in biobased materials, adsorbents, and integrated treatment systems, among other nascent technologies, are enabling the more efficient and effective exploitation of green materials and recovery of resources from waste while improving water quality. This Special Issue aims to capture cutting-edge multidisciplinary research and novel methodologies addressing the interconnected challenges and opportunities at this nexus, highlighting interdisciplinary efforts that support sustainable waste management, promote resource circularity, address clean water scarcity, and advance global environmental health.
This Special Issue targets cutting-edge multidisciplinary research and technological advancements in sustainable waste valorization and the development of green materials with a focus on innovations in water treatment and environmental remediation. It explores the critical nexus between sustainable waste valorization, green materials’ development, and innovations in water treatment and environmental remediation. Focusing on integrated yet transformative approaches that transform diverse waste streams into valuable biobased materials and functional products, this Special Issue invites research contributions that deepen conceptual understanding and drive technological advances at the nexus of green materials, waste management, water quality enhancement, and ecosystem restoration, all grounded in circular economy and environmental sustainability principles. This Special Issue aims to feature novel methodologies for waste-derived water purification materials, eco-friendly remediation techniques, bioenergy production, and resource recovery innovations that mitigate pollution and support the Sustainable Development Goals.
Key topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Advanced biological and biochemical methods for waste treatment and resource recovery.
- Biochar and novel waste-derived adsorbents and catalysts for water treatment and contaminant removal.
- Case studies on waste-derived materials, integrated low-cost water purification, and environmental remediation technologies.
- Circular economy strategies and policies promoting sustainable waste management and material reuse.
- Development of waste derived biobased materials for environmental applications.
- Energy–water–waste nexus in sustainable environmental management.
- Environmental impact assessment, lifecycle analysis, and sustainability modeling of waste valorization and green material exploitation pathways.
- Green chemistry approaches in waste valorization and synthesis of eco-friendly materials.
- Holistic modeling and simulation of integrated systems involving waste, water, and green materials.
- Innovative technologies and processes for converting solid, organic, and agricultural waste into value-added materials and energy.
- Integration of AI, sensor technologies, and digital tools in waste valorization and water treatment processes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
