Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
With the acceleration of the global energy transition, renewable energy is playing an increasingly pivotal role in shaping future energy and industrial systems. Renewable energy-driven chemical processes and energy systems are rapidly evolving to enable multi-sector decarbonization and achieve carbon neutrality. Consequently, the process design, integration, operation and control of such systems have become critical, as they directly affect efficiency, reliability and operational flexibility.
This Special Issue aims to gather cutting-edge research focusing on the process design, integration, operation and control of renewable energy-driven chemical and energy systems. It seeks to explore how process integration, advanced control strategies and data-driven and artificial intelligence (AI) methods can facilitate deep integration and coordinated operation across system components, thereby enabling an efficient, reliable and flexible transition toward smart chemical and energy systems.
Research Topics (including, but not limited to, the following):
1. Process design and synthesis of renewable-driven chemical and energy systems
Focusing on the systematic design of novel process flowsheets and topologies for converting intermittent renewable power into chemicals and fuels.
2. Dynamic modeling, integration and advanced control
Addressing renewable intermittency through dynamic system modeling, multi-energy vector integration and advanced control strategies for safe and efficient operation.
3. Optimization and management of integrated chemical and energy systems
Investigating coordinated optimization and scheduling strategies for systems coupling multiple energy carriers (e.g., power, heat, hydrogen) and material flows.
4. Operation and flexibility under renewable energy variability
Exploring flexible operation mechanisms and adaptive strategies for systems subject to high variability in renewable energy supply.
5. Data-driven approaches and artificial intelligence (AI) applications
Applying machine learning, AI and data-driven methods to complex challenges in system design, operational optimization, state prediction and fault diagnosis.
6. Life cycle assessment (LCA), techno-economic analysis (TEA), and multi-objective evaluation
Conducting comprehensive sustainability assessments, including environmental and economic dimensions, for renewable-powered chemical and energy systems.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Processes is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
