Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues.

At present, the growing presence of Contaminants of Emerging Concerns (CECs) and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in various environmental matrices poses significant challenges to environmental health and safety. These contaminants, which include a wide range of chemical substances such as pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, and industrial chemicals, especially polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides, perfluorinated compounds (PFAS), and flame retardants, both brominated and organophosphate esters, are increasingly detected in air, water, soil, and biota. Their persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxic effects necessitate urgent and comprehensive research efforts.

Currently, there is a critical need to enhance our understanding of the sources, distribution, transformation, and impacts of CECs and POPs in the environment. Advanced analytical methods and novel monitoring approaches are essential to detect these contaminants at trace levels and to assess their ecological and human health risks. Furthermore, exploring effective mitigation and remediation strategies is paramount to managing their presence and preventing further contamination.

This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for the latest research findings, innovative methodologies, and risk assessments related to CECs and POPs in environmental matrices. It seeks to advance scientific knowledge and inform regulatory frameworks to address the challenges posed by these contaminants.

  1. Suitable topics for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:1. Environmental remediation for contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), especially per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using sustainable processes and technologies, e.g., advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), and biodegradation process via microbials.
  2. Fate and transport, source appointment of micro/nano-plastics and CECs and POPs.
  3. Use different strategies to produce biofuel with high productivity.
  4. Development and application of novel analytical techniques and monitoring tools.
  5. Biodegradation, photodegradation, and other transformation processes of CECs and POPs.
  6. Innovative remediation and mitigation strategies to reduce the levels and impacts of these contaminants.
  7. Case studies and field investigations highlighting real-world scenarios and interventions.

We encourage submissions that address these topics through interdisciplinary approaches, combining insights from chemistry, biology, environmental science, toxicology, and policy studies. This Special Issue aims to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to tackle the pressing issue of CECs and POPs in our environment.
