Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

It is well known that thermal spraying has been employed for decades in the manufacturing of polymer and polymer-composite coatings, with continuous development and refinement to the present day. In thermal spraying, the feedstock material covers a broad range of materials—among them polymers and polymer-composite materials as well—which serve as the base constituents for manufacturing protective coatings. During spraying, the feedstock material is projected onto a substrate surface, where it deforms, overlaps, and solidifies, building up a continuous and adherent coating layer. The deposition is driven by thermal energy, kinetic energy, or a combination of both, depending on the specific thermal spray process employed.

Thermal spray processes that can be used for manufacturing polymer coatings include flame spraying, high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF), high-velocity air fuel (HVAF), plasma spraying and cold spraying. The advantages of thermally sprayed polymer-based coatings are closely associated with their low cost, ease of manufacture, and functional performance, including enhanced corrosion protection, wear resistance, anti-icing, and anti-fouling properties.

This Special Issue focuses on new polymer feedstocks, particularly advanced polymers, polymer blends and fibre- or particle-reinforced composites, and their deposition via thermal spraying intended for application on metal structures to enhance surface properties, extend service lifetime, and provide protection in demanding operational environments.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Novel polymers and polymer-based coating manufacture by thermal spraying

  • Fibre‑ or particle‑reinforced polymer‑composite coatings
  • Corrosion-resistant, wear-resistant and multifunctional polymer coatings

  • Applications of thermally sprayed polymer and polymer-composite coatings in industrial sectors
  • Structure–property relationships and performance evaluation of sprayed polymer coatings
  • Modelling, diagnostics, and characterization of polymer deposition mechanisms

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
