Advances in Edible Films and Coatings Functionalized by Nanostructured Biopolymer Composites

Edible films and coatings are at the forefront of sustainable food packaging, offering eco-friendly alternatives to conventional plastics while enhancing food quality and shelf life. This Special Issue invites innovative research and reviews on nanostructured biopolymer composites that improve the mechanical, barrier, and functional properties of edible materials.

• Novel biobased materials, including food by-products, and nanostructured composites.
• Advanced fabrication techniques such as electrospray, spraying, and multilayer coatings.
• Incorporation of bioactives, nutrients, and probiotics for controlled release and functional foods.
• Safety, digestibility, regulatory compliance, and consumer acceptance.
• Strategies for industrial scalability, cost-effectiveness, and circular economy integration.

By consolidating recent advances and highlighting current knowledge gaps, this Special Issue aims to accelerate research and innovation in the areas of edible coatings and films, contributing to sustainable, health-oriented, and high-performance food packaging solutions.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
