Special Issue Information

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to invite authors to submit articles to the Special Issue entitled “Compounds derived from Horticulture Crops and their biological activity”.

This Special Issue is dedicated to the latest findings on the potential of horticulture crops-based bioactive molecules to interact with living systems, from bacteria to multicellular euracyotic organisms. We invite papers regarding the activity of various phytochemicals such as phenolics, betalains, carotenoids, vitamins, sterols, alkaloids, terpenoids, organosulfur compounds and many other plant-related metabolites to be submitted. Due to low toxicity in humans, plant-based chemicals are widely used in the food industry as pigments, preservatives and antioxidants. The favourable effects of bioactive compounds are recognized in the context of oxidative-stress-related diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases and neurological disorders. However, growing data demonstrate that phytochemicals may lead to health benefits by acting via multiple mechanisms. Therefore, drug discovery based on plant-derived bioactive compounds is an interesting proposal of therapeutic strategies for various disorders. Moreover, understanding the relationships between phytochemicals abundant in food and drugs can clarify problems related to the alteration of drug activity caused by food components which, in turn, may result in optimizing treatment regiments in humans.

This Special Issue will bring together recent research on the structural diversity of bioactive compounds, and a comprehensive analysis of the synergistic/antagonistic interactions, antiviral, antimicrobial and anticancer properties of compounds isolated from horticulture crops. This Special Issue is also especially dedicated to papers demonstrating the results of phytochemicals at a molecular level as well as the potential therapeutic usefulness and safety of bioactive molecules isolated from horticulture plant material and extracts. In this issue, research on plant extracts with unknown compositions is not welcome.

In this respect, authors are invited to submit original articles, short communications and reviews exploring and summarizing the effects of bioactive compounds from horticulture crops on living cells including in vivo as well as in vitro experimental models.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
