Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A large number of medicinal plant species are still exploited from native populations in wild habitats all over the world, to obtain special active compounds used for therapeutic purposes. In general, wild herbs exhibit great morphological and chemical diversity as a consequence of various genetic and environmental factors. Genetic polymorphism existing in indigenous populations is likely to be influenced by the adaptation to diverse environmental factors. Wild herb populations provide rich sources of raw materials for different industrial purposes, however, with variable active compound amounts and patterns, as a result of changing conditions. Nowadays, gene expression studies provide valuable information about the background of active compound accumulation, and control mechanisms exist in different medicinal plant species. Characterization of wild herb taxa with the use of molecular biological techniques is a modern approach to the discovery of intraspecific taxonomic differences. Exploring morphological and chemical variability is an essential tool in the conservation of medicinal plant genetic resources as well as a basis for the improvement of new cultivars for growing.

In this Special Issue of Plants, our aim is to provide invaluable information on recent findings from the front line of research, concerning morphological and genetic variation in wild herb species. We welcome submissions in the form of original papers on the recent advances of morphological, genetic and biochemical studies as well as reviews of the field.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
