Breeding Progress of Root, Tuber and Banana Crops
This special issue belongs to the section “Plant Genetics, Genomics and Biotechnology“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Root, tuber and banana (RTB) crops, including banana, cassava, potato, sweet potato, taro and yam, among others, play a major yet underappreciated role in global food security and climate resilience, particularly for smallholder farmers and processors in the Global South. Cassava is Africa's most produced staple and China and India lead global potato production, whereas RTB crops are forecasted to create nearly USD 200 billion in additional value across the African continent up to 2050, the highest value among all groups of crops. Recent state-of-the-art modelling research highlights roots and tubers and their exceptional climate resilience among all crop groups.
Despite chronic underfunding, substantial progress has been achieved in all aspects of the genetic improvement of RTB crops, including yield, agronomic, quality and processing traits, climate resilience, increased breeding efficiency, genetic gains, and on-farm impact.
We invite breeders, geneticists, and scientists to submit original research and reviews on all aspects of RTB genetic improvement to this Special Issue. This Special Issue will provide an authoritative account of recent scientific advances and aims to inspire the next generation of researchers to advance these vital crops and strengthen farmers’ incomes and livelihoods.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Plants is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
