Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

According to the Sustainable Use of Wild Species Assessment published in 2022 by the Inter-governmental Science Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), one in five people depend on wild plants, algae, and fungi for food and income. The IUCN Red List estimates that over 20% of aromatic and medicinal plant species worldwide are critically endangered.

This Special Issue, “Sustainable Conservation and Management of Medicinal Plants, will highlight the plants that are overharvested, especially in regions where the harvesting of medicinal and aromatic plants brings income to communities who depend on them. The emphasis will also be on the importance of preserving the overall biodiversity and ensuring that medicinal resources stay available and that the ecosystems where they are present stay balanced. It will also cover the measures that can be taken for the sustainable use of medicinal plants and the conservation of the habitats where they are found. The Special Issue will also address the change of biotic and abiotic conditions due to climate change and what adaptive measures would be needed to conserve and manage the sustainable use of medicinal plants.
