Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Miniaturization is a primary goal in modern photonics. The transition from bulky refractive optics to flat phase-shifting elements, such as optical metamaterials, enable the creation of compact, lightweight, and highly functional optical systems. Metastructures and diffractive optical elements have been actively developed in recent years, demonstrating remarkable capabilities in manipulating light. Current results show that micron-thick devices can achieve efficient light focusing, bending, reflection, beam shaping, beam splitting, and multifunctional combinations, opening new opportunities for integrated optical platforms.

Compared to a plasmonic counterpart, dielectric metasurfaces offer significantly lower optical losses, higher efficiency, and better stability and linearity, while maintaining CMOS compatibility. The use of various material platforms (such as Si, TiO2, SiO2, Ge, GaAs, CaF2, ZnSe, etc.) allows for the selection of transparent or high-reflective windows across a wide range of wavelengths. This enables high Q factors, minimal heating, and scalable fabrication, making dielectric metasurfaces attractive for beam manipulation, lensing, sensing, and holography.

Conversely, plasmonic metasurfaces offer strong field confinement and enhanced light–matter interaction, making them attractive for sensing, nonlinear optics, and surface-enhanced spectroscopies. Ongoing research continues to explore hybrid approaches that combine the advantages of both platforms.

This Special Issue focuses on developments in materials, design methodology, modelling approaches, fabrication techniques, and applications of dielectric/plasmonic optical metasurface-based devices.

  • Novel materials for meta-devices;
