Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue aims to provide a focused platform for contributions examining the health effects of vegetarian and plant-based dietary patterns, with particular emphasis on phytochemicals as integral components of these diets.

We invite original research, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses that move beyond single-nutrient approaches and address whole dietary patterns and dietary quality within vegetarian or predominantly plant-based models.

A key objective of this Special Issue is to collect and present current evidence on how plant-based diets and rich in phytochemicals interact with the physiological processes relevant to disease prevention and performance across the lifespan. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, cardiometabolic health, inflammation, oxidative stress, gut microbiota modulation, immune function, and metabolic regulation. Importantly, we encourage submissions that examine the combined and potentially synergistic effects of plant-based diets and physical activity, including their role in supporting metabolic health, body composition, physical performance, recovery, and healthy aging. No less important are submissions addressing interindividual variability, lifestyle context, and nutrient adequacy for physically active individuals and athletes.

By integrating dietary patterns with physical activity and lifestyle behaviors, this Special Issue seeks to advance a holistic understanding of how plant-based diets contribute to human health in real-world settings.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs).
