Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Increasing evidence indicates that specific nutrients and dietary patterns, especially during critical periods like early development, can influence long-term health outcomes by modulating the epigenetic markers at both the nucleic acid and chromatin levels. This may, at least in part, be explained by a dynamic interconnection among nutrition, epigenetics, and the gut microbiota. Indeed, dietary components significantly influence the composition and function of the gut microbiota, which then produces metabolites that act as substrates or regulators for epigenetic enzymes that can alter the host's epigenome and, ultimately, influence host health. Reciprocally, the host's epigenome can influence microbial composition. It follows that an extensive comprehension of this triad is crucial for maintaining health and preventing or attenuating the course of disease.

In this Special Issue, we would like to present contributions addressing insights on the interplay between diet, gut microbiota, and host epigenetics in modulating human wellbeing.

Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
