Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children affects the whole body and is fundamentally associated with children’s nutrition. Advanced CKD stages are usually related to being underweight, where nutritional management is essential in achieving normal growth and development from early infancy to puberty, with nutritional needs even higher in children with advanced CKD.

On the other hand, overweight and obesity are rising in the developed world, a consequence of impaired nutrition at a young age, worsening pre-existing renal disease and affecting the development of obesity-related complications such as obesity-related nephropathy. Also, cardiovascular risk factors—such as cardiac disease, hypertension, etc.—along with impaired nutrition, lead to increased renal damage risk at a young age and increased cardiovascular burden in adulthood, where cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality, with CKD being one of the most common determining comorbidities. Therefore, adequate nutrition at a young age is essential for preserving kidney health, maintaining kidney reserve in already existing pediatric CKD, and managing complications in advanced disease while achieving normal growth and development. Another interesting aspect is to develop discussion among paediatric nephrologists to establish the best optimal procedures for calculating renal function tailored to each paediatric patient.

In this Special Issue, we aim to tackle the importance of nutrition and possible interventions in pediatric renal disease along the continuum from prevention and management perspectives in early CKD to novelties in nutritional management in advanced pediatric CKD. Furthermore, it is important to establish diagnostic, nutritional and therapeutic pathways and procedures for children undergoing haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and patients with functioning kidney transplants.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
