Nutrients Webinar | Correlation Between Nutrition and Kidney Stones, 12 June 2025

Eating habits can strongly influence the incidence of various types of kidney stones, especially in patients identified as “Frequent Kidney Stone Formers”. Epigenetic factors can negatively amplify and facilitate the serial formation of new kidney stones, as well as the growth of pre-existing ones. As such, the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of nephrolithiasis cannot be considered truly comprehensive unless nephrologists or urologists incorporate dietary habits into the development of personalized nutritional plans, depending on the type of stones diagnosed. Nutrition itself is influenced by numerous factors, including excessive and inconsistent dietary habits; diverse food heritages from West to East; the “dietary segregation” experienced by some populations living in isolated geographical areas—even within urban environments, due to the growth of areas of immigrant populations in cities and metropolises; the economic status of affected individuals; the laboratory methods used for analysis; and, finally, the widespread and poorly regulated use (in terms of quality and quantity) of foods with varying shelf lives. These food products can affect intestinal absorption and renal load, ultimately contaminating the laboratory results necessary for accurate diagnosis. This webinar aims to focus on and deepen the understanding of these aspects, with the goal of disrupting the mechanisms underlying the recurrent formation of crystals and litholites.
