Background Introduction

Nanostructured materials have emerged as a transformative class of materials for addressing critical challenges in healthcare and environmental sustainability. Their unique physicochemical properties—including high surface area, tuneable morphology, versatile surface chemistry, and exceptional optical, electronic, and catalytic characteristics—have enabled significant advances in biomedical technologies such as drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, antimicrobial therapies, tissue engineering, and precision medicine. At the same time, nanostructured materials have demonstrated outstanding potential in environmental applications, including water purification, pollutant degradation, air quality control, environmental monitoring, renewable energy conversion, and resource recovery. Recent progress in sustainable synthesis, surface engineering, heteroatom doping, and multifunctional nanomaterial design has further expanded their capabilities while supporting greener manufacturing approaches. However, challenges remain in scalable production, long-term stability, biocompatibility, environmental safety, and understanding nano-bio and nano-environment interactions, all of which are essential for successful real-world implementation.

Aim and Scope

This Special Issue aims to present the latest advances in the synthesis, characterisation, functionalisation, interfaces, and applications of nanostructured materials for biomedical and environmental technologies. We welcome original research articles and comprehensive reviews that investigate the relationships between material design, interfacial properties, biological and environmental interactions, and application performance. Contributions that present innovative strategies for improving functionality, sustainability, safety, and translational potential are particularly encouraged.
