Dear Colleagues,
Mixed siliciclastic–carbonate depositional systems provide important insights into the interactions between terrigenous and bioclastic sediments. Consequently, they contribute to a better understanding of key geoscientific topics, including the following: (i) sedimentary environments; (ii) morphosedimentary evolution in response to recent processes (e.g., hydrodynamics) and base-level fluctuations (e.g., tectonics and eustasy); (iii) the relationship between sediment supply and hydroclimatic factors; (iv) the marine habitats responsible for bioclastic sediment production; (v) the evolution of sedimentary basins; and (vi) petroleum geology.
These investigations can be conducted across varied spatial and temporal scales using diverse approaches, ranging from the analysis of sedimentary basins, through seismic surveys, cores, and outcrop studies, to the investigation of modern depositional environments using point-source sediment sampling techniques.
Although the number of studies focusing on mixed depositional systems has increased considerably in recent decades, their occurrence is still believed to be underestimated because they comprise varying contributions from two end-member systems: siliciclastic and carbonate.
This Special Issue invites researchers conducting studies on mixed siliciclastic–carbonate depositional systems, with particular emphasis on the Quaternary. However, contributions addressing ancient analogues, ranging from the Cenozoic to the Precambrian, are also welcome. The Special Issue focuses on the following topics: (1) mineralogical, sedimentological, and geochemical perspectives; (2) lithostratigraphy, facies models, and sequence stratigraphy of mixed siliciclastic–carbonate systems; (3) the settling and hydrodynamic behavior of siliciclastic and bioclastic grains; (4) mixing processes involving contemporaneous siliciclastic and bioclastic grains within mixed systems; and (5) the responses of mixed sedimentary systems to sea-level fluctuations.
