Dear Colleagues:
Graphite is a layered mineral composed of strong sp²-hybridized carbon networks within each graphene layer, held together by weak van der Waals forces. This anisotropic structure endows graphite with unique properties—lubricity, conductivity, and thermal stability—making it indispensable for lithium-ion battery anodes, refractories, and lubricants. Exfoliation yields graphene, a single atomic layer with exceptional mechanical and electronic properties. Given their excellent performance at the energy storage and next-generation electronics, graphite mineral was regarded as critical non-metallic mineral resource worldwide.
Under the kind help of managing editors of Minerals, the guest editors in head of Prof. Qinfu Liu successfully organized two editions of Special Issues “Graphite Minerals and Graphene” in the journal. The first edition’s ten papers centered on natural and coal-derived graphite, including petrographic, thermal-simulation studies, graphite crystallite growth, etc. The second edition’s six papers expanded toward sustainable production, flotation, mineral-catalyzed anthracite graphitization, etc. Collectively, the two editions link geological occurrence, processing, structural transformation, advanced characterization, functional performance, and sustainability.
Since the graphite and graphene are continuing hot topics both at academic and industry fields in the following years, the third edition of the Special Issue “Graphite and Graphene” will be open for paper submission in the Minerals journal. We welcome original research and reviews on graphite and graphene geology, resources, exploration, beneficiation, purification, emerging applications, and environmental remediation. We look forward to contributions that advance the science and high-value utilization of graphite and graphene.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Minerals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
