Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Pediatric infectious diseases remain a major global health challenge, accounting for substantial morbidity and mortality despite remarkable advances in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Children represent a uniquely vulnerable population due to developmental immunology, age-specific exposure patterns, and social determinants that influence disease transmission and outcomes. In recent years, rapid progress in molecular diagnostics, genomic surveillance, and immunological profiling has significantly enhanced our understanding of pathogen behavior and host responses in early life. At the same time, emerging and re-emerging infections, antimicrobial resistance, and vaccine hesitancy continue to threaten gains achieved in child health worldwide.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive and multidisciplinary overview of contemporary developments in pediatric infectious diseases, with particular emphasis on innovative diagnostic tools, mechanisms of pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance and advances in vaccine research and implementation. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, and expert perspectives that explore translational science, clinical applications, and public health strategies. By bringing together contributions from clinicians, microbiologists, immunologists, epidemiologists, and vaccine scientists, this Special Issue seeks to foster collaboration and accelerate evidence-based approaches that will ultimately improve prevention, early detection, and therapeutic outcomes for infectious diseases in children.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Microorganisms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
