Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute to the Special Issue, titled “Memristive Devices and Circuits Made from Materials with Low-Dimensional Structures.”
Machines need brains. Until now, machine brains have been efficiently built based on inventions of Leibniz, Boole, Peirce, Wittgenstein, Bothe, and Shannon, culminating in the development of computers with single-memory stored program architecture built by Zuse, Eckert, Mauchy, and von Neumann. Commonly called von Neumann architecture, this design is based on the separation of memory and processor interacting under the control of deterministic software.
Today, we are living in a transition period where economic and energy constraints are calling for differently organized information processing tools combining the advantages of digital, analog, and neuromorphic computing.
For this Special Issue, we are seeking contributions beyond conventional silicon and oxide-based approaches in developing new basic functional elements of computer architectures.
For this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Investigations of two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures allowing the ultimate scaling of switches and memristive elements;
- Memristors using low-dimensional 0D, 1D, and 2D structures and their networks;
- Devices involving two-dimensional electron and hole gases;
- Functional elements based on polycrystalline, nanocrystalline materials or materials containing designed defect structures facilitating memristive behavior;
- DNA and organic memristors.

Manuscript Submission Information

Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
