Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Although currently extremely rare, chemical incidents pose a significant threat to society and the agencies that have to respond to them. Responders, who may have limited or no training in the field of chemical threats will respond to apparently everyday incidents, which later turn out to be a chemical incident, be that deliberate such as a terrorist attack or accidental. In all areas of countermeasures against chemical attacks—be it threat assessment, prevention, preparedness, response or recovery—it is crucial to be able to detect and, if possible, identify the threatening material. One of the core measures to achieve this goal is providing responders with the necessary tools to save lives and limit damage to property in case of malicious chemical incidents.

Accordingly, this Special Issue seeks to showcase original work in the form of short communications, full papers and reviews that focus on all aspects of nanomaterials, micro/nanodevices and miniaturized systems oriented to selective chemical threats, i.e. chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial compounds, detection. Of special interest are novel concepts, chemical sensors and peripheral devices that show advances that improve limit of detection, response time and long-term operation on relevant scenarios. In addition, papers may report “on-field” testing under real conditions of commercial devices and correlate the performance with an existing analytical method.
