Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Hyponatraemia is the commonest electrolyte imbalance, and its prevalence increasaes with age. The last decade has seen a major expansion in our understanding of the effects of chronic hyponatraemia and its associations with impaired mobility, falls, fractures, osteoporosis, confusion, and mortality. Despite this, the management of hyponatraemia in routine clinical practice frequently fails to comply with existing guidelines. Challenges include inadequate diagnosis of underlying cause(s), insufficient or incorrect investigation and absence or failure of treatment. These challenges are particularly problematic in older people, as they are more prone to hyponatraemia and more susceptible to its adverse effects, and identifying and treating underlying causes is more difficult. This Special Edition will collect the latest research in our understanding of hyponatraemia in the older adult. Manuscripts that are not specific to older people with hyponatraemia but have learning points applicable to an older population are welcome.
