Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Periodontitis is a highly prevalent chronic inflammatory disease affecting the supporting structures of the teeth and a leading cause of tooth loss worldwide. Beyond its local effects, it is associated with systemic conditions such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and adverse pregnancy outcomes, underscoring its importance as a public health concern. In addition, periodontitis significantly impacts patients’ quality of life, affecting oral function, esthetics, and overall well-being.
Recent advances have improved the understanding of its complex pathogenesis, involving interactions between dysbiotic microbial biofilms and the host immune-inflammatory response. Modern diagnostic approaches enable earlier detection and more accurate assessment of disease activity through biomarkers, microbiological testing, and advanced imaging techniques, complementing traditional clinical parameters.
Therapeutic strategies have also evolved. While non-surgical periodontal therapy remains the foundation of treatment, adjunctive approaches such as antimicrobial agents, host modulation, laser therapy, and regenerative procedures enhance clinical outcomes. The role of inflammation and immune dysregulation in periodontal tissue destruction and repair is a key research focus, with increasing interest in novel therapeutic targets.
Despite these advances, important challenges remain in translating emerging evidence into routine clinical practice. Continued research is needed to validate new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and to establish standardized, evidence-based protocols.
This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of current diagnostic approaches and therapeutic strategies in periodontitis, including original research articles, systematic reviews, and clinical studies. Particular emphasis is placed on advanced diagnostic methods, such as biomarkers, microbiological profiling, imaging techniques, and artificial intelligence-based tools for early detection, risk assessment, and disease monitoring. Topics also include periodontal therapies (non-surgical, surgical, regenerative, and host modulation) and the impact of systemic conditions on periodontal health. Prosthetic strategies in periodontally compromised patients are considered, with focus on treatment planning and prosthetic design to support diagnosis-guided rehabilitation and long-term stability.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Medicina is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2200 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
