Dear Colleagues,
One-dimensional nanomaterials, such as nanowires and nanotubes, have attracted widespread attention in the last few years within the scientific community for their peculiar structural and mechanical properties, which are capable of achieving impressive performances with a high degree of tuneability.
The strongly size-dependent mechanical behaviour of these materials, such as their strength and elasticity, can differ significantly from their bulk counterparts, due to the extreme aspect ratios which can be obtained. The crystal structure also plays a paramount role in the overall material response, which can also be strongly affected by structural defects, such as dislocations and vacancies, acting as a nucleation point for mechanical stress, or dramatically changing the electronic behaviour of the nanomaterial.
Understanding the structural and mechanical properties of 1D nanomaterials is fundamental for a broad range of applications, i.e., nanocomposites, nanoelectronics, photocatalysis, energy storage, and biomedical devices.
The scope of this Special Issue, entitled “Structural and Mechanical Properties of 1-D Nanomaterials”, is to cover the state of the art of research on the production, characterization, and applications of 1D nanomaterials, focusing on their structural and mechanical properties and addressing the open challenges in this field.
