Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The growing global emphasis on sustainability, environmental protection and circular-economy strategies has driven significant interest in biopolymers and their composites. This Special Issue of Materials seeks to highlight cutting-edge research and technological developments in the design, synthesis, characterization and application of biopolymers and sustainable composite materials across biomedical, industrial and environmental sectors. We invite contributions that explore innovative approaches to enhancing the properties of biopolymers, including mechanical performance, biodegradability and bioactivity, as well as the integration of natural additives or nanomaterials to create multifunctional composites. Studies on additive manufacturing techniques, injection molding and other advanced processing methods that enable the production of complex biopolymer-based structures are particularly welcome. Furthermore, research focusing on environmental impact assessment, life-cycle analysis and the economic feasibility of biopolymer materials and composites is encouraged, as these aspects are critical for large-scale adoption.
This Special Issue aims to serve as a comprehensive platform for interdisciplinary work that bridges material science, engineering, biotechnology and environmental sciences. Contributions may include experimental studies, theoretical modeling, computational simulations and case studies demonstrating real-world applications. By showcasing novel materials, innovative processing methods and sustainable strategies, this Special Issue intends to advance the understanding and implementation of biopolymers and their composites, ultimately promoting their wider use in both biomedical and industrial contexts. We welcome researchers, engineers and industry practitioners to contribute original research articles, reviews and perspectives that push the boundaries of sustainable materials development and application.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
