Building the Future of Veterinary Medicine: Foundational Data in Physiology and Pathology

This special issue belongs to the section “Animal Science“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

High-quality research in veterinary physiology and pathology is becoming an increasingly critical component of database construction in an era defined by the rapid acceleration of artificial intelligence and automation. A deep, mechanistic understanding of lesions, both morphologically and molecularly, enables disease diagnosis based on specific simple evidence and a limited set of biomarkers. This, in turn, establishes it as a foundation of disease diagnosis and research. Consequently, advanced studies in veterinary physiology and pathology are indispensable for establishing the forthcoming era of remote diagnostics.

Despite this necessity, it is a gloomy reality that veterinary databases significantly lag behind human medical databases in both quantity and quality. The full-scale implementation of AI absolutely requires standardized, structured databases; however, even the volume of data based on arbitrary standards remains insufficient. Given that veterinary species maintain close lifestyles with humans and exert mutual influence, this endeavor is not only for the benefit of animals but for humanity as a whole. Therefore, we, as contemporary researchers, bear the responsibility of establishing foundational evidence—relative or absolute standards—for animal health. This effort is essential for the advancement of veterinary medicine and its preparedness for the future. The value of this evidence will be significantly enhanced if it is illuminated through multifaceted approaches, including clinical, serological, morphological, molecular biological, and multi-omics perspectives.

Accordingly, we cordially invite all researchers engaged in veterinary physiology and pathology to submit manuscripts that present this type of multifaceted, evidence-based research. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and communications.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Life is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
