Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Land degradation and desertification are among the most pressing environmental challenges of the twenty-first century, affecting more than 40% of the Earth's land surface and threatening food security, biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human livelihoods. Climate change, unsustainable land use, soil erosion, salinization, vegetation loss, and declining soil health continue to accelerate degradation processes, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions. Addressing these challenges requires a deeper understanding of the underlying biophysical, ecological, and socio-environmental mechanisms driving degradation, as well as the development of innovative technologies and management strategies for prevention, mitigation, and restoration.

Aim of the Special Issue and how the subject relates to the journal scope.

This Special Issue aims to advance scientific knowledge on the mechanisms of land degradation and desertification and to highlight innovative approaches for restoring degraded ecosystems and promoting sustainable land management. The topic aligns closely with the scope of Land journal, particularly in the areas of land degradation, desertification, soil health, ecological restoration, land–climate interactions, biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, environmental monitoring, and emerging technologies for land assessment and management.

This Special Issue will welcome manuscripts that link the following themes:

  2. Wind Erosion, Sand Stabilization, and Desertification Control.

A Full Restoration Trajectory Framework for Assessing Dryland Tree-Based Restoration

Dryland reforestation and afforestation have expanded rapidly worldwide. Their success depends not only on tree establishment, but also on long-term persistence and goal attainment. Yet how well these dimensions are addressed across the full restoration trajectory remains unclear. Here, we developed a full restoration trajectory assessment framework and used LLM-assisted literature analysis to systematically evaluate 2362 empirical studies of dryland tree-based restoration. Our results showed substantial imbalances across the restoration trajectory. Research attention was uneven across restoration stages, with greater emphasis on degradation drivers and water constraints before restoration, and on early establishment rather than post-establishment management and long-term persistence during restoration. Goal–outcome alignment was high for major ecological objectives but substantially lower for socioeconomic goals, and cross-boundary effects were rarely considered. Together, these findings reveal that current research remains biased toward establishment and within-site outcomes, while ecological appropriateness, persistence, socioeconomic goal attainment, and broader spatial consequences receive comparatively limited attention. By quantitatively evaluating dryland tree-based restoration across the full restoration trajectory, our study identifies key evidence gaps and provides a framework for guiding restoration toward greater ecological appropriateness, long-term persistence, and goal-oriented evaluation.
