Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue explores the evolution and role of economic and financial institutions throughout history and their impact on economic development and socioeconomic change. Through exploring various historical periods and critical events, it aspires to find out how economic and financial institutions have shaped and been shaped by economic and societal conditions over time. Fostering a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic interplay between economic and financial institutions and economic performance, this Special Issue not only explores the shaping of economic practices and policies over time, but also discusses contemporary issues and debates related to these institutions. Furthermore, this Special Issue invites papers of various disciplines and methodologies; contributions from new institutional economics, economic history, behavioral economics, evolutionary economics, economic sociology, historical political economy, contract theory, property rights theory, and game theory, among others, are welcome.

The Special Issue has the following objectives:

  1. Understand the historical evolution of economic and financial institutions.
  2. Analyze the impact of these institutions on economic development.
  3. Analyze the development and performance of specific institutions (e.g., banking services, insurance, etc.) across different historical periods.
  4. Examine the interplay between economic and financial institutions and economic performance.
  5. Examine case studies of significant economic events and institutional responses.
  6. Based on historical findings, discuss contemporary issues and challenges facing economic and financial institutions.
  7. Develop critical thinking through historical and economic analysis.

Various topics are welcome, including, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Case studies in economic and financial history
    • Pre-Industrial economies (ancient and medieval economies, early modern European economies, Chinese economic history, etc.).
    • Historical monetary networks and unions.
    • Industrial Revolution economies.
    • The Great Depression and institutional responses.
    • Post-World War II economic reconstruction.
  2. Historical development of financial institutions
    • Origins and development of early banking systems.
    • The rise of central banking and its impact.
    • Development of capital markets and stock exchanges.
    • The development of joint stock companies.
    • The role of money in the economy under a historical perspective.
    • Money, finance and financial crises in economic history.
  3. Contemporary issues and debates
    • Global financial integration and institutional adaptation.
    • Financial crises and the role of regulatory institutions.
    • The future of central banking and digital currencies.
    • Current trends and future directions in economic and financial institutions.
    • Innovations in financial technology and digital currencies.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
