JPM Webinar | Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease

Metabolic syndrome pathophysiology is multifactorial and involves abdominal obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and hyperglycemia. The activation of lipoprotein lipase and the inhibition of secretion of very low-density lipoproteins are central factors. Atherogenic dyslipidemia is causally linked to cardiovascular disease. At the same time, there is new evidence regarding genetic predisposition in metabolic syndrome causation. From early studies on twins to genome-wide association studies, the genetic origin of metabolic syndrome was found to span different genetic loci. Thus, environmental factors play a key role. Knowledge of increased genetic susceptibility to the syndrome permits a personalized approach to treatment and prevention.

In this context, oxidative stress augments and Nrf-2 pathways are involved, the activation of which are equally favorable targets for oxidative stress suppression after treatment with natural product derivatives and phytotherapy. This attempt can also reduce the costs and side effects.

In the current webinar, firstly, lipid metabolism dysfunction in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome will be discussed. Genes and metabolic syndrome heritability will be analyzed, focusing on specific genes along with interaction with environmental factors. Last but not least, specific benefits from natural products’ utilization in the treatment of metabolic syndrome will be presented along with molecular pathways modification and cell signal regulation from phytotherapy.
