Dear Colleagues,
Composite materials are increasingly being used in aerospace and automotive structures due to their high specific stiffness and strength. As the service environment of composite structures becomes increasingly complex and extreme, traditional trial-and-error design methods and experimental characterization approaches are facing prominent bottlenecks: long design cycles and high test costs.
Advanced computational modeling methods have become a core technical path to break through these limitations. Modern numerical approaches, including the finite element method, phase field method, discrete element method, multiscale modeling framework, multi-physics coupling simulation and emerging data-driven modeling technologies, provide effective tools for researchers to reveal the intrinsic failure mechanisms of composites under quasi-static loading, dynamic impact, long-term cyclic fatigue and complex multi-field coupled conditions. The insights obtained from these simulations can effectively support the iterative optimization of composite structure design, significantly reduce the reliance on expensive full-scale tests, and further improve the long-term service reliability and safety margin of composite components in extreme working conditions.
This Special Issue, entitled ‘Advanced Computational Modeling of Composite Structures’, is fully aligned with the core aim of the Journal of Composites Science, which focuses on advanced technology and the development of composite materials. We invite worldwide researchers, engineers and academic scholars to submit their works to this issue, to jointly promote the innovative development of computational composite mechanics and accelerate the engineering application of composite structures.
This Special Issue welcomes both original high-quality research articles and in-depth state-of-the-art reviews. The covered research areas include, but are not limited to:
- Progressive damage analysis of composite structures;
- Phase field method-based prediction of mechanical properties of composite materials;
- Discrete-element-method-based simulation and prediction of mechanical behaviors of composites;
- Damage evolution mechanism of composite structures under low-velocity impact loading;
- Fatigue damage evolution and service life prediction for composite materials;
- Data-driven modeling, machine-learning-assisted performance prediction and intelligent design of composites;
- Computational micromechanics and multiscale modeling for composite structures;
- Multi-physics coupling modeling of composite structures under hygro-thermo-mechanical, electro-magneto-thermo-mechanical and other extreme multi-field service conditions.
