Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) is a devastating insult that leads to significant morbidity and mortality. Care of these patients requires a multidisciplinary approach in the acute, rehabilitative, and chronic phases of injury to optimize potential for good neurological outcomes. This Special Issue will focus on how providers can work in a multidisciplinary fashion to enhance recovery. Relevant topics include the following:

  • Evidence of a multidisciplinary approach for the management of sTBI in and after the hospital.
  • Optimal timing of the initial involvement of rehabilitation providers (PM&R) and therapists after sTBI for conditions including, but not limited to, the following:
    • Disorders of consciousness;
    • Spasticity;
    • Motor recovery;
    • Cognitive dysfunction;
    • Mental health.
  • The role of advance practice providers (APPs) and critical pharmacists in the critical care management of sTBI.
  • The key role of nutritionists in the management of sTBI, including guidelines or innovations in nutrition after sTBI.
  • Best practices and/or experience with running an outpatient multidisciplinary TBI clinic.
  • Evidence for and best practices for utilizing neuropsychological testing in the management of TBI.
