Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Uterus transplant is a unique form of fertility treatment that aims at offering the possibility of gestation and delivery to women affected by absolute uterine infertility. Although uterus transplant is a relatively new procedure, with the first successful birth only 11 years ago, it has already been replicated in many countries with an excellent success rate.

Many of the initial clinical challenges due to the novelty of the field have been overcome at a faster pace than one would have imagined considering the complexity of the procedure and the necessity of a multidisciplinary approach.

Moving forward, the challenges mainly rest with the standardization of the evaluation of the donors and uterine grafts, minimization of the immediate and long-term adverse effects of immunosuppression while looking at different immunosuppressive regimens and risk stratification of the recipients, and strategies to minimize pregnancy complications.

These are the themes that we will address in this special issue of JCM.
